Since the passing of the legend that is Alex Trebek back in the Fall of 2020, there has been one name that the nerd universe has wanted to stand behind the lectern and run the world’s smartest game show. This week, he’s had his turn.
Granted, I’ve been one of those nerds and it’s been a long time coming to get to this week. However, I must say that perhaps LeVar may not be as good of a fit than I or many others have thought.
LeVar has been pretty rough in his delivery style, making small little errors here and there that when compared to some of his fellow guest hosts, just make him look less than stellar. Maybe it was nerves of being on that stage, or knowing the expectations of the Trekkies were high, I just expected a bit better from this week’s shows.
Sure, one would argue that he’s not a quiz show host, which is true. However, some of the other guest hosts have though appeared a bit more polished and also had no quiz show hosting experience.
Many people think that Ken Jennings may be the odds on favorite to take over permanent residency of the Jeopardy lectern when production resumes in a couple weeks for the new season. However, I’m not sure that even Ken would be the right fit. He’s great as a contributor to the show in his post-playing days, but I think the honor needs to go to one of my top two picks, Robin Roberts or Mayim Bialik. Although it is unlikely that Robin Roberts would be able to exit her gig on Good Morning America to do Jeopardy full time, and even if Disney/ABC would allow her to commute between NYC and LA, I honestly don’t think she would want to put herself through it (Although Michael Strahan seems to hold up pretty well splitting time between GMA and FOX NFL Sunday). Mayim on the other hand, she does have a second season of the FOX sitcom “Call Me Kat” yet to shoot, but I’m sure that’ll be easy enough to schedule around if she got the job (That plus I think it just barely got renewed, so if that series ends after two seasons, she’ll have all the time in the world to host a quiz show)
I believe Alex even said that he would want to see a woman take over the show after he was gone. It may very well be in Sony’s (The producer/owner of the show) best interests to perhaps go in that direction. Because if they pick the wrong person to assume one of the honorific spots in all of television, it could very well spell the end of Jeopardy in a few seasons, and likely take down its prime time partner Wheel of Fortune.
So for LeVar, good show ol’ chap! It’s time to beam back up and take your place in a future episode of Star Trek: Picard, the future needs you!
